Qualcomm, Audi In Anti-Trust Spotlight; Europe Responds

Govt worker exposed in Qualcomm anti-trust case

I’ve been writing regularly about the flood of anti-monopoly probes against western firms recently, so it seems only appropriate that I end the week with a flurry of new headlines involving cases against chipmaker Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), luxury car maker Audi (Frankfurt: VOWG), and a long-overdue response from a major western business group. In the first news bit, the anti-monopoly investigator has reportedly nabbed a government insider who was helping Qualcomm in the case against it. The second bit has media reporting the regulator is preparing to levy a large but relatively manageable fine against Audi. And the third bit has the EU’s local chamber of commerce calling on China to stop bullying its members. Read Full Post…

Beijing Bans Symantec, Kaspersky; Warns Microsoft

Beijing bans Symantec on government computers

Beijing’s recent campaign against foreign tech firms is picking up more momentum, with word that security software makers Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) and Kaspersky Lab have been banned from selling to government agencies. The move continues a trend that has seen Beijing take similar moves against software from Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and hardware from IBM (NYSE: IBM) over worries that their products could compromise national security.

Meantime in another ominous sign for foreign tech firms, a government ministry that conducts anti-monopoly investigations is warning Microsoft not to interfere with its ongoing probe of the company. Industry watchers will note that the warning from the State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC) comes as an unrelated trial gets set to start for a British-American couple being charged with interfering in a bribery probe into British drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (London: GSK). Microsoft Spotlights Rise Of JD, Anti-Trust Probes

Microsoft probed by Commerce Ministry

US software giant Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is the subject of 2 major news stories today, casting a spotlight on a pair of very different trends involving e-commerce and foreign companies in China. The first news bit has the world’s largest software company formally launching sales of its Xbox gaming console in China through a tie-up with JD.com (Nasdaq: JD), spotlighting the rapid rise of China’s second largest e-commerce company following its own tie-up with Internet giant Tencent (HKEx: 700) earlier this year. The second news bit looks more ominous, with word that Microsoft is being probed by one of China’s anti-trust regulators. Read Full Post…

Giant, RDA De-List As Deal-Making Slows

RDK closes privatization

Two more US-traded Chinese firms are on the cusp of de-listing, with online game operator Giant Interactive (NYSE: GA) and chipmaker RDA Microelectronics (NYSE: RDA) just announcing they have wrapped up buy-out deals that will pave the way for their imminent privatization. These 2 de-listing stories were announced months ago and are completely expected. But the bigger underlying story is the lack of major new privatization announcements in the last half year. In a similar development, major new IPOs by Chinese firms in New York have slowed considerably since a boom of offerings in April and May, indicating the broader deal-making market may be entering a new, more stable phase. New Default, Merchants Bank Move Spotlight China Risk

Merchants Bank goes to Luxembourg

A couple of headlines are underscoring the high risk that China’s financial sector could soon pose for both domestic and international investors, as the nation’s financiers look for the most creative but not necessarily the safest ways to raise money. In the first instance, China Merchants Bank (HKEx: 3968; Shanghai: 600036) has officially joined the nation’s big national banks in a move to Europe, choosing the free-wheeling Luxembourg market as its first destination. Meantime, media are reporting that yet another domestic Chinese financial product is about to default, joining a growing list of such distressed high-yield offerings. Read Full Post…

Gamers Giant, Ourgame Bet On HK

Ourgame files for HK listing

Hong Kong has always been a distant second to New York for Chinese technology stocks, which prefer more mature US investors to a less predictable environment in Asia. But the market could be quietly gaining some important momentum in the gaming space, with word of 2 new listing plans from the sector. The first of those has game developer Ourgame filing for a listing to raise up to 750 million yuan ($120 million) in Hong Kong, while the latter has media reporting that privatizing Giant Interactive (NYSE: GA) may also be eying a listing in the former British colony. US Levies New Anti-Dumping Duties On Chinese Solar Panels

US erects new trade barrier for Chinese solar panels

In a move that should surprise no one, the US has announced it will levy new punitive tariffs on China-made solar panels to close a loophole from an earlier ruling. This move won’t help anyone and could seriously stifle the industry’s development just as it starts to emerge from a prolonged downturn. It also looks worrisome from a broader perspective for Chinese panel makers, since signs are emerging that their products could also be shunned in Japan and India, 2 of the world’s other promising emerging markets for solar power plant construction. Shanghai Street View: Reluctant Retirement

Shanghai Daily loses veteran editor to Chinese immigration laws

Shanghai has won kudos for hosting a major regional summit these past few days, but the situation was far more somber in the newsroom at the Shanghai Daily, publisher of my weekly Street View column. That’s because after more than 8 years in China, one of my longtime editors and a personal friend was spending her final week at the newspaper, including her last day on Friday. Read Full Post…

New Private Equity Giant Eyes Solar Buys

Minsheng Investment eyes solar consolidation

Following reports last month of the imminent formation of a major new private equity investor, media are now saying the company, China Minsheng Investment, has formally registered and is gearing up to make its first investments. The new company certainly has the resources and connections to quickly become a major player on both the domestic and global private equity scenes, with an initial 50 billion ($8 billion) in registered capital. Now it appears the company will start by helping to consolidate China’s embattled solar panel-making sector, which will become its first focus area. Read Full Post…

TV Giants Add To Online Video Woes

Youku, others take new hit from traditional TV

China’s online video sites, still reeling from a recent government crackdown on 4 of their most popular TV series, are gearing up for a second round of pain, with word that some of the nation’s top TV stations are launching a new assault on the group of media newcomers. The latest battle in this budding war between traditional and new media has big-name TV stalwarts like CCTV and Hunan Satellite Television reportedly preparing to stop allowing some of their most popular shows to be viewed over sites operated by major online operators like Youku Tudou (NYSE: YOKU) and Baidu’s (Nasdaq: BIDU) iQiyi. Giant Buy-Out: Paving Way For A Real Gaming Giant?

Giant finalizes buy-out plan

The ongoing cleanup of neglected Chinese firms from US stock exchanges continues, with word that online game developer Giant Interactive (NYSE: GA) has finalized its plan to go private. A report on the bid says that several other Chinese online game firms are also planning privatizations, as former industry leader Shanda Games (Nasdaq: GAME) is also in the midst of its own such bid. It’s not hard to see why these companies are going private, as their shares have gone nowhere for years due to anemic growth. But what’s interesting here is the prospect that some of the private equity firms funding this wave of buy-outs could finally force a few of these companies to merge and create a more vibrant major new player with real growth potential.
