A week after its stock was hammered by concerns about big spending on its online-to-offline (O2O) services, leading search engine Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) has found a major new ally for that part of its business in Japanese noodle chain Ajisen Ramen (HKEx: 538). This particular deal will see the Hong Kong-listed Ajisen and another investor pump $70 million into Baidu’s takeout dining service, providing a major supporter not only due to the investment but also the chain’s strong presence in major Chinese cities.
Baidu’s stock is still recovering from a hammering last week that saw the shares fall by nearly 20 percent to a year-low after it reported anemic 3.3 percent profit growth in its latest reporting quarter due to heavy spending on O2O services. At the same time, CEO Wang Xing is also shooting down rumors that his company is in the process raising $1 billion in new funds, and is repeating his previous position that his company isn’t in any hurry to make an IPO.
The sudden release of information by this low-profile company raises the bigger question of what’s the motivation behind this flurry of activity for the normally low-profile Meituan. Online search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) continues to play catch-up to leading group buying sites Meituan and Dianping, with word that it’s investing a fresh $200 million in its young Internet-based take-out dining service. Internet giant Baidu(Nasdaq: BIDU) is making a major push into the group buying space, announcing a bold campaign that includes 20 billion yuan ($3.2 billion) in new spending as it aims to replicate its earliest success in online search. Rapid consolidation is taking place in China’s hired car services market, with word that a new alliance is shaping up between major local player Yidao Yongche and an existing tie-up between global giant Uber and local Internet search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU). As a longtime Chinese Internet watcher, I’m quite surprised at the sudden and rapid speed of consolidation in this particular sector, since such consolidation in other areas tends to be a slow and painful process that often takes years.
A major factor behind this sudden and rapid consolidation could be the participation by all 3 of China’s top Internet players, including Baidu, alongside social networking giant Tencent (HKEx: 700) and e-commerce leader Alibaba (NYSE: BABA). E-Commerce in China
It seems like I write about the latest Internet crackdown far too often these days, as Beijing focuses on a wide range of industries where it wants to clean up what it sees as unhealthy business practices. Another 2 such crackdowns are in the headlines as we head into spring, one in the scandal-wracked e-commerce space and the other in online video. Both crackdowns actually began earlier, and these latest moves just show the regulators don’t feel that their job is finished yet.
Of course it’s a slight oversimplification to say this broader series of crackdowns is coming from a single source, since the commerce regulator has been the main driver behind the e-commerce crackdown and the broadcasting and publishing regulator is behind the video clean-up. But those 2 concurrent campaigns, along with other similar ones, probably underscore a recent resolve by central leaders in Beijing to clean up a Chinese business landscape that’s often riddled with corrupt and illegal practices. China’s rapidly evolving paid car services realm is creating some strange marriages, bringing together e-commerce leader Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) and social networking giant Tencent (HKEx: 700) last month with a merger of their taxi app services. Bottom line: Baidu’s temporary halting of updates for its mobile operating system is likely to become permanent, and looks like a smart move as it focuses on more efficient ways to boost its mobile market share.
In a move that seemed inevitable, Internet search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) has put the brakes on its 3-year-old mobile operating system (OS) that was sapping big resources with little or no chance for long-term success. The move comes just a month after Baidu trumpeted the growing contribution of mobile revenue to its overall business, surpassing traditional desktop PC search revenue for the first time in December. There’s no mention in Baidu’s latest quarterly report of how much of its mobile search revenue came from smartphones equipped with its self-developed mobile operating system, Yun OS, but I suspect the answer was “very little”.
