Bottom line: The latest muddled comments from Lenovo founder Liu Chuanzhi could reflect his growing frustration with CEO Yang Yuanqing, who could be forced out in the next year if the company’s performance doesn’t improve.
It’s no mystery that PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992) has been stumbling in the last 2 years due to bad execution in the smartphone space. But slightly more mystifying are new remarks by company founder Liu Chuanzhi on his views about his self-groomed successor and CEO Yang Yuanqing. Liu is currently chairman of Lenovo parent Legend Holdings (HKEx: 3396) and is 71, which isn’t too old. But his remarks on Yang’s performance on the sidelines of a recent event make him seem a bit muddled and also convey the conflicting feelings of loyalty and frustration that he must be feeling about his appointed successor.
Before I attempt to translate his actual remarks, we should put the Lenovo story into a bit of context to understand what Liu is saying. Bottom line: Lack of buzz around Xiaomi’s launch of production in India and Lenovo’s new line of ZUK smartphones reflect fatigue that is rapidly consuming domestic Chinese brands due to rampant competition in their home market.
Signs of fatigue continue to grow in China’s overheated smartphone market, where rampant competition and unending price wars these last 2 years have led to saturation and a rapid slowdown. That fatigue is visible in 2 of the latest headlines, one of which has former superstar Xiaomi failing to garner much buzz as it launches production in India to jump-start its stalling growth. The other has the struggling Lenovo (HKEx; 992) launching its own new brand of smartphones, as it also faces lackluster performance for its current lineup sold under its own name and the Motorola brand it acquired last year.
China’s smartphone market is the world’s largest, but also the most competitive due to the presence of many homegrown domestic players. That reality has forced many mid-sized and smaller names to seek tie-ups with wealthier partners, and forced everyone to look abroad for growth as profits shriveled at home. Bottom line: The presence of the CEOs of Microsoft and Intel at a Lenovo tech fest in Beijing represent the struggles that all 3 former PC giants are facing, and how each is looking to China in a bid to reverse its slide.
It’s not often that anyone uses the term Wintel anymore, which refers to the duopoly of Microsoft’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows operating system (OS) and central microprocessing chips from Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) that dominated the computing world for decades. But Wintel was center stage this week in Beijing, in a rare case where the CEOs of both Microsoft and Intel shared the stage with the CEO of Lenovo (HKEx: 992), the world’s largest PC maker, which was holding a bash to launch a wide range of new products.
Lenovo has been steadily hyping this event that finally took place on Thursday, where it unveiled a wide range of new products like a dual-screen smart watch and laser projector smartphone, all of which looked interesting but not too exceptional. New battles broke out in 2 of China’s most hotly contested high-tech sectors last week, casting a spotlight on the aggressive and even potentially illegal tactics that Chinese companies sometimes use in their fierce rivalries and quest for market share.
One of those saw taxi app operator Didi Kuadi announce a major promotion offering aggressive subsidies for its hired car services. The other saw video high-flyer LeTV (Shenzhen: 300104) use equally aggressive tactics to launch its new line of smartphones, igniting a war of words after another prominent rival criticized its actions as “irrational”. Bottom line: Lenovo has done remarkably well since defying skeptics with its landmark IBM PC buy a decade ago, and could stand a 50-50 chance of remaining relevant a decade from now in the fast-changing world of high-tech gadgets.
Global PC leader Lenovo (HKEx: 992) is commending itself on how far it has come since its landmark purchase of IBM’s (NYSE: IBM) PC business 10 years ago, setting it on a path that has made it the world’s top computer seller. (company announcement) I’ll admit I was a skeptic at the time of the IBM deal in 2005, and have become much more bullish on Lenovo since then. Still, the company hasn’t completely convinced me that it has the necessary skill and vision to move past its global PC crown, which is fast becoming yesterday’s news as traditional computers rapidly lose ground to newer devices like smartphones and tablets.
Before I look at the challenges that Lenovo is facing, I want to start by personally congratulating the company on its huge accomplishments over the last decade since it announced it would purchase IBM’s storied PC business for $1.25 billion. Bottom line: Huawei’s massive spending at the world’s biggest telecoms show this week hints at its determination to make big inroads in Europe and the US this year for its older networking equipment and newer smartphone businesses.
In between running from interview to interview at the world’s largest telecoms show this week in Barcelona, I managed to scribble down some notes on which Chinese firms were spending the most heavily at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC). Such spending hints at company priorities for the year ahead, including which markets they are targeting. In this case it’s worth noting that MWC is largely a show for customers from North America and especially Europe, so anyone who attends as an exhibitor is almost certainly eying those markets.
All that said, it should come as no surprise that telecoms giants Huawei and ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063) were the 2 biggest spenders among Chinese firms at this year’s show, based on my own analysis. PC giant and smartphone aspirant Lenovo (HKEx: 992) was the only other Chinese firm with major representation. PC maker Lenovo (HKEx: 992) is hinting at a major overhaul for its crowded stable of brands later this year, in a move to simplify the many names it has acquired in a buying spree over the last decade. This kind of move is long overdue for Lenovo, which launched its global buying binge a decade ago with a landmark deal to buy the PC business of IBM (NYSE: IBM). The aggressive duo of Huawei and Lenovo (HKEx: 992) may be consolidating their spots on the global smartphone stage, as domestic rival ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 00063) shows signs of stumbling. Those are my major takeaways from the latest quarterly smartphone results released from industry research firm IDC, which show big sales and market share gains for Huawei and Lenovo in the second quarter of this year. Media have been buzzing these last few days about a Hong Kong stock exchange filing revealing that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has acquired 6 percent of Chinese PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992), implying the deal represents a vote of confidence by the world’s biggest Internet company in the world’s top PC seller. But anyone with any memory will recall that the transaction is just part of Lenovo’s payment for its recent purchase of Google’s Motorola cellphone division. Update: Shortly after writing this post, Sony has announced it will sell its Vaio unit to investment firm Japan Industrial Partners (JIP). I still believe that JIP could ultimately bring in Lenovo to help it operate the unit in a new joint venture or other tie-up.
Let’s begin my first post in the Year of the Horse with a look at PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992), which has suddenly gone into M&A overdrive with the latest word that it may be in talks to acquire Sony’s (Tokyo: 6753) PC business. I wrote just before the holiday that Lenovo might already be taking on too much with its $2.9 billion purchase of cellphone maker Motorola, which came late last month just a week after its $2.3 billion purchase of IBM’s (NYSE: IBM) low-end server business. (previous post) Individually each of these 3 deals actually look relatively smart, as all complement Lenovo’s existing businesses. After more than a half year of silence, Lenovo’s (HKEx: 992) dream to buy the low-end server business of IBM (NYSE: IBM) is suddenly back in the headlines, in a development that I predicted quite a while ago based on the fact that both sides really want to do this deal. The first time around saw the talks founder and ultimately stall due to disagreement on price. But such a deal makes so much sense for both sides that it’s almost inevitable that it will happen, which leads me to believe that we could see announcement of a preliminary agreement sometime in the first or second quarter. Meantime, Lenovo is also seeing a positive development on the Japan front, where its 3-year-old PC joint venture with local partner NEC (Tokyo: 6701) is doing better than expected. Read Full Post…
