China Mobile Faces Declining Profits In 2014

China Mobile gives aggressive 4G targets

The headlines are swamped today with news about leading wireless telco China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL), after Chairman Xi Guohua spoke an event in Guangzhou where he gave details on a wide range of issues as the carrier formally launched its new 4G service. I don’t usually discuss the bottom line until the end of my posts, but with so much news and new data in the headlines it does seem better this time to start here with that assessment. In this case it’s safe to say that China Mobile will embark on a massive spending spree to promote 4G in 2014, meaning we’re likely to see declining profits for much or all of the year. New Tune For GSK, Woes For PetroChina In Anti-Graft Sweep

GSK cleans up business practices

China’s ongoing anti-graft sweep continues to gain momentum as we approach the end of the year, with major new developments in the headlines from British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) (London: GSK) and domestic energy giant PetroChina (HKEx: 857; Shanghai: 601857; NYSE: PTR). In the former case, GSK is taking the revolutionary step of saying it will no longer pay doctors anywhere in the world to promote its products. In the latter, media are reporting that another top PetroChina official has been detained and resigned as he assists with ongoing investigations of corruption at the state-run giant. Read Full Post…

Unicom Picks FDD 4G, China Mobile Counts Down To iPhone

Unicom puts money on FDD-LTE

After 2 weeks of silence following the long-awaited issue of 4G mobile licenses, China Unicom (HKEx: 762; NYSE: CHU) is finally making some hints about its strategy in the new era of high-speed telecommunications. I’m usually quite negative about the company due to its disorganization and lack of focus, but for once I have to compliment it for a strategy that looks reasonably well conceived. Meantime in other 4G news, the final countdown to China Mobile’s (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) iPhone launch may finally be nearing an end, with speculation that announcement of the long-overdue tie-up could come as soon as Wednesday. Anti-Corruption Drive Broadens With Lianhua Probe

Lianhua exec comes under investigation

In a development that many would say was widely expected, Beijing’s recent campaign to root out official corruption at state-owned companies is spreading deeper into the system, with word that an executive from grocery chain operator Lianhua Supermarket (HKEx: 980) is under investigation. I don’t normally follow Lianhua, as it’s a distinctively second-tier company that operates unimpressive grocery stores that are usually mostly empty whenever I happen to shop there. But that’s exactly why this particular probe is interesting, as it shows that the anti-corruption campaign is moving beyond the high-profile biggest state-run companies that have been targeted so far and into the smaller firms that populate the big majority of China’s corporate landscape. China Telecom Eyes 4G Launch, China Mobile Gets Aggressive

China Telecom readies 4G service launch

With the 4G telecoms era now formally begun, China’s 3 major telcos are suddenly rushing to give out more details about their plans in this new era of high-speed mobile communications. In the latest news from this fast-moving story, media are reporting that China Telecom (HKEx: 728; NYSE: CHA), the smallest of the nation’s 3 wireless carriers, will formally launch its 4G brand as soon as later this week. Meantime, leading telco China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) has disclosed pricing plans that look quite aggressive for its 4G service in the city of Chongqing. I should also add I’m not surprised that we haven’t heard anything yet from the nation’s third telco, China Unicom (HKEx: 762; NYSE: CHU), which has a recent history of slowness and disorganization in response to such major new developments. iPhone Finally Coming To China Mobile

Apple, China Mobile finally reach iPhone deal

This week will go down in the history books as the week when China finally entered the high-speed telecoms era with its granting of 4G licenses after years of waiting. But China still has the dubious distinction as one of the world’s few markets where Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) wildly popular iPhone isn’t available to more than half of the country’s 1 billion mobile subscribers. That looks set to finally change soon, with media reporting that China’s dominant carrier China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) has finally signed an iPhone deal with Apple. Read Full Post…

China Mobile Eyes Harmony, iPhone For 4G Launch

China Mobile to brand 4G service as He

Update: Since originally writing this, the MIIT has finally formally issued 4G licenses, allowing each of the 3 major telcos to operate a service based on the homegrown TD-LTE standard. China Mobile will formally launch service on December 18.

It’s a new day, so I figured that’s a good enough excuse to write about the latest 4G wireless services rumors, which seem to be coming almost daily at this point. The newest rumors look a bit sexier than other recent chatter, this time unveiling the brand name industry leader China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) will use for its new service, and also adding the company will finally offer an Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone for the network when it formally launches service later this month. Word of the actual launch date, in this case December 18, was probably the least interesting news in this latest report. That’s because every report I’ve read these last few months nearly always contains a launch date that is ultimately incorrect, and there’s no reason to believe that this new report will break that trend.
