In this final edition of my weekly microblog column from the Year of the Snake, I thought I’d step back from all the promotional hype I usually write about and look at the more ordinary and often revealing moments from some of China’s top tech executives. This week we look at some of the quieter and more everyday thoughts from top officials at newly listed Autohome (NYSE: ATHM), educational services firm New Oriental (NYSE: EDU) and professional networking site LinkedIn (Nasdaq: LNKD). Such personal moments not only offer insight to some of these top executives and how they think, but also seem like an appropriate way to end the lunar year as everyone heads home for family reunions. Tencent WeChat In Anemic US Promotion
I wasn’t too impressed on reading about one of the first promotions in the United States by Tencent (HKEx: 700), following reports last year that it planned to take its popular WeChat mobile instant messaging service to the lucrative but highly competitive market. I realize it will be difficult for WeChat to find an audience in the US, where its name is unknown and it will face stiff competition from local players like Whatsapp and even Google (Nasdaq: GOOG). But the company will have to do a bit more to raise its profile if it really hopes to win over demanding US consumers. Read Full Post…
LinkedIn Takes New Step In Slow Road To China
Online professional networking leader LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD) took a big step towards entering the lucrative but tricky China market last week when it created a new China chief position and filled it with an industry veteran as it explores a formal service launch. The move was just the latest in the company’s slow and careful approach to China, and could boost its chances of success in a market that has proven difficult for other global giants like Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) and eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY). Nokia Upsets “Iron Rice Bowl”
Some longtime Chinese workers at a Nokia (Helsinki: NOK1V) plant in Guangdong got a rude surprise when they were recently asked to take pay cuts, as the former cellphone giant struggles to halt its rapid decline. But rather than accept the cuts, the workers went on strike to protest the cost-saving measure after Nokia’s recent purchase by Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), a move which could offer the best chance of saving the company. LinkedIn, Evernote Low-Key In China Internet Approach
Since everyone is buzzing with excitement today over the successful IPO for social networking (SNS) pioneer Twitter (NYSE: TWTR), I thought I would end the week with a look at 2 other up-and-coming US Internet firms and their decidedly low-key approach to China. I’m talking about LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD), the professional networking site, and Evernote, a cloud-based note-taking service. Neither of these 2 up-and-comers has made any high-profile announcements about their entries to China, even though both are active in the market. That could be a smart approach, following high-profile missteps by earlier arrivals that may have ultimately hurt their prospects in the large but also challenging market. Read Full Post…
Weibo: Google’s Schmidt Eyes China Gadget Market
The microblogging realm has been buzzing these past few days with speculation on a brief China visit late last week by Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt, who checked out counterfeit goods at a gadget market in Beijing’s Zhongguancun high-tech area. Equally interesting was the inclusion in Schmidt’s group of 2 former Google executives who now work for Xioami, the fast-rising smartphone maker that hopes to someday become China’s equivalent of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). Baidu’s Revenue Zooms, Tries Thailand
Whoever is following online search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) these days certainly doesn’t seem to care much about profits, at least based on the company’s latest results. That’s my conclusion after looking at Baidu’s just-released quarterly report, which showed that Baidu’s profit grew at an anemic 1.3 percent in the third quarter. Perhaps investors were just happy that Baidu posted any growth at all, since global tech giant Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has just posted its third consecutive profit decline in its latest quarterly report. Weibo: Xiaomi Finds Fans In Facebook, Vancl
High-flying smartphone maker Xiaomi is at the center of 2 recent strings of microblog posts, one touching on an interesting new connection with Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) and the other hinting at an increasingly cozy relationship with struggling online clothing seller Vancl. Interestingly, Xiaomi’s talkative co-founder and chief executive Lei Jun is largely absent from the dialogue in both cases, which each has sensitive overtones, implying that perhaps we could see more news in the weeks ahead. Microblogs: No Holiday For Huawei, Xiaomi’s OS Hint
Most of China may have taken a holiday during last week’s 3-day Mid Autumn Festival, but it was all work for networking equipment giant Huawei as it used the time to host a global IT forum in Holland. Xu Wenwei, head of Huawei’s enterprise division, used his microblog to hype the event, which looks like the company’s latest effort to convince the world that it’s a global company and not just another maker of cheap “made in China” goods. Meantime, the chatty Lei Jun took time out from his Mid Autumn holiday to drop the latest hint that Xiaomi, the fast-rising smartphone maker he co-founded, is developing its own mobile operating system (OS) that could someday compete with rival products from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Read Full Post…
Xiaomi Joins Mobile OS Field
There’s an interesting report out saying that up-and-coming smartphone maker Xiaomi is developing its own mobile operating system (OS), becoming the latest Chinese player to try to muscle in on a market now dominated by 3 US companies — Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT). I’ll admit there have been so many similar initiatives by both Chinese hardware and Internet companies these days that it’s hard to know which of the campaigns are genuinely new systems and which are just variants of Google’s popular and free Android OS. Lee Kai-Fu, Xue Manzi Look Human In Personal Setbacks
I’d like to finish out this week by taking a look at 2 business personalities in the news these last few days, namely tech guru Lee Kai-Fu and tech financier and industry pundit Charles Xue, more commonly known by his self-given moniker Xue Manzi. Lee has just disclosed over his microblog that he has been diagnosed with cancer, while Xue’s arrest for soliciting prostitutes stems from own personal fondness for beautiful women. Read Full Post…
