Lenovo Picks New Targets In Apple, Samsung

Lenovo takes aim at Apple, Samsung

After years of nonstop talk about making Lenovo (HKEx: 992) the world’s largest PC brand, CEO Yang Yuanqing is readjusting his sights these days onto competing with global smartphone and tablet PC leaders Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Samsung (Seoul: 005930). On the one hand, I have to congratulate Yang for finally focusing on the right targets in his quest to build Lenovo into a true global computing leader. But on the other hand, I have serious doubts about whether Yang can challenge either Apple or Samsung, despite his success in overtaking Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) briefly last year to become the world’s largest PC brand. Dell Suffers China Identity Crisis

Dell shifts China strategy

The recent turmoil at struggling PC maker Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) is spilling over into its operations in China, where the company’s president has just resigned even as a top Asia executive discusses a new strategic direction for the market. All of this comes against a broader backdrop that saw global PC sales post their worst drop in history during the first quarter, as more consumers switched off their computers in favor of smaller and more convenient tablet computers and smartphones. China’s Smartphone Crown: Who Cares? 看待中国称冠智能手机市场不要太认真

I’m feeling a bit cranky and contrarian today, so I’m going to be somewhat bold and give the following response to yet the latest headlines trumpeting China’s passing the US to become the world’s largest smartphone market: Who cares? I’ll admit that my response to this development is perhaps a bit unfair, since China’s attainment of the world’s smartphone title is certainly an important milestone for a country where even traditional wired telephone service was still rare as recently as 20 years ago.

Lenovo‘s Growing East-West Split 联想东西方业务不断分离

I don’t know if anyone else out there has noticed this, but a recent string of events is pointing to a growing rift between PC giant Lenovo’s (HKEx: 992) North American-based operations and its home base in China, in what could be a good or bad thing depending on how the situation develops. The nascent rift was on display recently with media reports that the company was forming a new Americas highly autonomous unit to strengthen its North and South American operations. International Board: The Endless Wait 国际板:无休止的等待

Since China first announced its plans to launch an International Board several years ago, a group of overseas-based companies that do big business in China have been waiting patiently to list on the board to raise both cash and their profiles on the mainland. Many of those companies were genuine foreign firms, such as banking giants HSBC (HKEx: 5; London: HSBA) and Standard Chartered (HKEx: 2888; London: STAN); but an equally large group were Chinese companies like mobile carrier China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) and PC maker Lenovo (HKEx: 992), which incorporated overseas so they could list their shares in Hong Kong. Now it appears that at least some of the Chinese companies that wanted to list on the International Board are losing their patience with the slow progress, with word that Lenovo’s parent and telecoms carrier China Telecom (HKEx: 728; NYSE: CHA) may both be exploring more traditional A-share listings for some of their units.

Lenovo Eyes Samsung, Apple 联想加强智能手机业务扩张

Forget about Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), the US computer giant that overtook China’s Lenovo (HKEx: 992) to retake the spot as the world’s biggest PC maker late last year. In discussing its latest quarterly results released late on Wednesday, Lenovo’s talkative chief executive Yang Yuanqing had scant time to discuss his company’s recent loss of the global PC crown to HP, a previous obsession for him for much of the previous 2 years. (results announcement) Instead, Yang appears to have turned his sights to some equally big targets in the form of Samsung (Seoul: 005930) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), the world’s top 2 makers of smartphones, as Lenovo makes its own aggressive push into the space.
