Despite his recent promises that he wouldn’t pursue any new major M&A, Lenovo (HKEx: 992) chief Yang Yuanqing appears to be addicted to purchasing global assets, as reflected by the latest news that he is exploring a potential new tie-up with struggling Japanese electronics maker Sharp (Tokyo: 6753). I’ve previously said that Yang’s addiction to M&A will result in some major challenges for Lenovo in the next few years, as it faces the difficult task of integrating various recently acquired assets in such diverse markets as Japan, Brazil and Germany.

The latest “me-too” war is brewing on China’s vibrant but crowded Internet with word that online video specialist LeTV is rolling out a new set-top box product that will allow consumers to surf the Web on their TVs. This new product roll-out comes just a month after up-and-coming smartphone maker Xiaomi launched its own set-top box product, and not long after PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992) also entered this space that looks promising but has yet to find a major audience. (previous post)
Just a day after I ridiculed a new mobile phone alliance between Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and China Unicom (HKEx: 762) (previous post), we’re seeing signs of another new China tie-up between the world’s largest software maker and PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992) that looks much more intriguing. Whereas the Unicom alliance looked set to fail for a number of reasons, this new potential love affair between Microsoft and Lenovo could stand a better chance of success because it contains strong incentives for both sides. What’s more, each company is the global leader in its main product area, but both are still minor players in the mobile computing category that is likely to become the wave of the future for computer makers.

SEC Charges Consultant With Fraud In Chinese Reverse Mergers (English article)
I was amused to read a new report saying that German business software giant SAP (Frankfurt: SAP) may list its shares on China’s planned International Board in Shanghai, since it’s been quite a while since I’ve read any reports like this, which were still quite common as recently as 2010. If I were an optimist, I would say these new reports might indicate a launch is coming in the first half of next year for the long-planned International Board, which would allow offshore companies to raise funds through IPOs in China. But instead, these latest reports, which appear to have originated offshore, are probably just a public relations exercise by SAP, which probably just wants to remind everyone of its commitment to China.
