Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) is stepping up its challenge to Baidu’s (Nasdaq: BIDU) dominance in online search, with word that the security software specialist has formed a new alliance with leading online travel firm Ctrip (Nasdaq: CTRP). (English article; Chinese article) This new alliance appears to be part of a clever tactic by Qihoo to form new tie-ups with Internet companies that specifically want to see more competition in the Chinese search market and thus are willing to work closely with Qihoo as it embarks on a new online search initiative. Accordingly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more such announcements in the months ahead as Qihoo tries to build up its So.com search engine as a viable alternative to Baidu’s own service that now controls around three-quarters of the market.
Security software specialist Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) is continuing its Internet search offensive by adding a new ratings feature to its product, leading me once again to applaud its innovative approach for this new initiative despite my broader doubts about this company. Media are reporting that Qihoo has added the equivalent of a “like” function to its search results similar to the one now on Facebook, which lets web surfers rate whether or not they find particular sites useful. The credibility crisis plaguing US-listed Chinese firms took a twist last week when first a group of Internet leaders and then another group of company executives launched attacks on the short sellers who sparked the crisis last year. While many of the earliest short seller attacks were based on real issues related to dubious accounting practices, the Chinese groups last week argued the recent attacks that have prolonged the crisis are unfounded and little more than ploys to earn fast money.

The blossoming war between Internet search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) and challenger Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) is becoming more colorful each day, with Baidu resorting to some interesting new tactics to defend its market dominance. In the latest wrinkle of this fast-developing story, Baidu appears to be asking many of its corporate clients to cut their ties to Qihoo, in what is looking like an increasingly dirty war where either side will do anything to attack the other.

I’ve been watching with interest these last couple of weeks as Internet software security specialist Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) takes an uncharacteristically low-profile approach to its new online search service, in a clear and interesting challenge to industry titan Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU). Qihoo’s controversial founder Zhou Hongwei has been mostly quiet since the service’s recent debut, even as media reported the company quietly severed its long-standing relationship with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) in launching its own technology. Now it seems that Zhou, who seems to thrive on controversy, is challenging Baidu itself, though not in the way that most people might think.

How many short sellers does it take to kill a strange tiger, or the company more commonly known as Internet software security specialist Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU)? The question itself may sound strange, but Qihoo, whose Chinese name means “strange tiger,” is once again in the spotlight after its data has been questioned once again by yet another short seller. This marks the third time such a report has come out since late last year, reflecting the wide degree of skepticism that many feel towards this company and its controversial leader.
