A couple of smartphone headlines are spotlighting 2 of this year’s top trends in the market, namely the rapid rise of Huaweiand the remarkable turnaround in China for Apple(Nasdaq: AAPL). The first headline has Huawei announcing lofty targets for the latest model from its line of mid-range smartphones. The second has Beijing becoming Apple’s unofficial Asian capital, with the opening of its fifth store in the city — more than any other in Asia.

Bottom line: Xiaomi’s newest product launch focused on cheap smartphones and LeTV’s scrapping of an IPO for its film-making unit reflect fading prospects for these former superstars due to stiff competition.
Former Chinese superstars Xiaomiand LeTV (Shenzhen: 300104) are in the headlines with new setbacks, reflecting the meteoric rises and equally fast falls that China is producing in its own version of the dot-com bubble. But this bubble has distinctly Chinese characteristics, and is coming in a more mature Internet where rampant competition and copycatting make it very difficult to make profits.
The first headline has Xiaomi rolling out 3 of its newest smartphones that are decidedly low-end, representing a big setback for the company’s drive to produce higher-end models that have fatter profit margins. Bottom line: Alibaba’s 60 percent sales growth on Singles Day is truly impressive, but was almost certainly boosted by merchants that delayed logging transactions on its network until the 24-hour period to help meet their sales targets.
The numbers are in, and e-commerce juggernaut Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) has posted a record performance for this year’s Singles Day online shopping extravaganza that has surprised even me for the margin by which it surpassed last year’s record. I’ll end the suspense right away and reveal that Alibaba posted 91.2 billion yuan ($14.3 billion) worth of sales over its platforms during the 24-hour online shopping binge, up more than 50 percent from last year’s $9.3 billion. To put that in perspective, Alibaba posted $112 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) for goods sold over all its platforms in this year’s entire second quarter. Bottom line: Larry Page’s latest remarks are the newest signal that Google is working to return to China with a local version of its Play store and Nexus phones, as it tries to open a new chapter in its tense relationship with Beijing.
Observers are putting the latest China comments from one of Google’s(Nasdaq: GOOG) co-founders under the microscope, trying to figure out the company’s intentions towards a market that it both loves and hates. The bottom line seems to be that Larry Page wants to personally distance himself from China, following his company’s high profile spat with Beijing over censorship that saw Google withdraw from the Chinese search market in 2010.
But at the same time, Page wants to let others take Google back into China, in a nod to the importance of a market that has become the world’s largest for both smartphones and Internet use. That’s probably quite a prudent approach in face-conscious China, where personal relationships are a key element to doing business. That same principle also means that meetings between people with strained relationships should also be avoided, which is what Page appears to be doing by personally distancing himself from Google’s future operations in China. Bottom line: The failure of 2 major touch-screen technology manufacturers in Guangdong is the latest sign of trouble in China’s overheated smartphone sector, with similar new closures likely to accelerate in the next few months.
China’s smartphone wars are taking an unexpected twist, with suppliers to some of the nation’s top brands emerging as the first victims of a prolonged battle for market share. I had previously expected at least one or two small- to mid-sized brands would bow out of the market by the end of this year, though we have yet to see any such developments.
Instead the inevitable shake-out appears to be starting in the supply chain, with media reporting that 2 major smartphone part suppliers have gone bankrupt in southern Guangdong province where much of the manufacturing takes place. (Chinese article) The insolvency of these 2 major suppliers, one in the boomtown of Shenzhen and another in the nearby city of Huizhou, comes just a couple of weeks after the bankruptcy of a major supplier of metal casings for smartphones sold by Huawei and ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063). Bottom line: Xiaomi’s first-ever quarter-to-quarter sales decline means it’s unlikely to meet its 2015 sales target, while Apple’s latest environmental announcement is part of a broader image-polishing campaign in China that seems to be working.
You don’t hear sputtering smartphone maker Xiaomicomparing itself to former role model Apple(Nasdaq: AAPL) too much these days, but both companies are in the headlines today as each pursues its own different agenda. An increasingly desperate-looking Xiaomi is reportedly eyeing the US, as the former high-flyer notches its first-ever quarter-on-quarter decline in smartphone shipments. Meantime, Apple is turning up its China public relations machine with announcement of a major expansion of its environmental protection campaign in the heavily polluted country.
Xiaomi and Apple were often mentioned in the same sentence as recently as last year, when the former was one of China’s hottest companies and pegged by some to become the nation’s first global smartphone brand. Bottom line: A new Pepsi-branded smartphone set to launch in China next week could get an initial boost from strong publicity, but will quickly fizzle due to lack of special features to distinguish it from others in the crowded market.
An entertaining new twist to China’s overheated smartphone story is coming from the soft drink sector, with word that global beverage giant Pepsi (NYSE: PEP) is preparing to enter a crowded space that hardly needs any new entrants. The headline looked somewhat strange to me, though nothing surprises me these days in a market where names like industrial equipment supplier Sany (Shanghai: 600031) and air conditioner maker Gree (Shenzhen: 000651) have all jumped on the smartphone bandwagon.
Such a bandwagon approach is quite typical for China, where local companies are always quick to join the latest trends even if they have little or no experience in the business. But foreign names are usually a little more savvy, and this particular instance was the first I could recall of a major foreign brand joining this kind of silly herd mentality that often ends in failure and big losses for the associated company. Bottom line: Huawei’s ongoing surge should help to consolidate its position as China’s leading domestic smartphone brand, while a newly formed cell tower operator will relieve China’s 3 telcos of the burden of owning and operating such assets.
The telecoms space is buzzing on both the operator and consumer products sides, with surging smartphone maker Huawei and a new cell tower operator called China Tower both rising in the latest headlines. The higher profile of these 2 telecoms headlines has Huawei continuing its rise to become the world’s third largest smartphone brand, stealing the title from the fading Xiaomi. Meantime, all 3 of China’s big state-run telcos have come out with one of their simultaneous announcements saying they have formally transferred their cell tower assets to China Tower.
This pair of stories is quite different, but the bigger picture is one of trying to improve by becoming more efficient and diverse. In the case of Huawei the company is trying to leverage its long experience in making telecoms equipment to diversify into the consumer-oriented smartphone space. In the second case, China’s telecoms regulator is trying to improve efficiency among the nation’s 3 stodgy telcos by doing something that carriers in the west did on their own long ago.
